BEDUTZED!

BEDUTZED! is an autobiographical story of the journey from Zerphy’s childhood on a farm in rural Pennsylvania dutch country to a life on the road as a clown, fool, and storyteller. It’s about the discomfort and necessity of finding a home somewhere in the in-betweenness of things.

Bedutzed! may be an autobiographical story, but the search for a home somewhere in the "in-betweenness of things" is universal…even if we can’t always put it into words (and song) as well as Michael Zerphy has. Or make it as moving...or philosophical...or hysterically funny.  Sometimes all at the same time! Michael’s love for his journey through life and all of the people in it so present in this lovely show.

Michael Zerphy is Bedutzed -- confused, befuddled-- as we all are by life. And he has a lot to say about his journey that you will enjoy hearing. Zerphy's show --combining storytelling, music, and clowning around-- is filled with deep human warmth, humor, vulnerability, surprises, and sensitive observation of himself and the rest of humanity. And banjo music! There is a tenderness in his stories toward the vulnerability and creativity of us humans, along with a healthy dose of laughter at ourselves. And banjo! It's a beautiful and uplifting show. Don't miss it!

Bedutzed! is a show that comes straight from the heart. It takes you on a topsy-turvy, zig-zag fool's journey, one man's struggle to make sense out of nonsense. So what if it took him seven decades to figure it out?

Michael Zerphy's "Bedutzed" in collaboration with his daughter Olivia brings the life of a guy from Lancaster, PA into a wonderfully alive, humorous, heartfelt solo performance. Michael has a magnetic presence that immediately puts his audience at ease. Without us knowing, he skillfully prepares us to come along on the journey as he shares personal stories and memories, weaving in songs and dreams that radiate into the space. I loved being surprised by Zerphy's seasoned and natural ability to tell such funny stories, and to be a true clown who can seamlessly navigate a complexity of emotions. He is masterful and so is Olivia's influence as the director. I could feel the collaboration of younger and older generations create a meaningful dialogue. Even though Olivia is not in the performance, her voice is heard. Zerphy's performance has stayed with me, transcending his singular voice, to create a shared experience touching everyone in the room. What a joyful, human work!

It is a really entertaining and moving piece of work, that touches deeply on where the impulse to play originates and how a lifetime of performing as a clown and storyteller can lead to a profound understanding of our place in the world
